The urban environment is a complex interlinked system. Decision-makers need not only better data on the complexity of factors in environmental and developmental processes affecting human health, but also an enhanced understanding of the linkages between these factors and health effects to determine at which level to target their actions most effectively. In recent years, there also has been a shift from trying to change at the national level to more comprehensive and ambitious actions being developed and implemented at the regional and local levels. Cities have come to the forefront of providing solutions for environmental issues such as climate change, which has co-benefits for health, but yet need better knowledge for wider health-centric action. This book provides the latest and most up-to-date information and studies for academics and practitioners alike.

He has experience and expertise in areas of all cause mortality, respiratory and cardiovascular disease, mental health and cognitive function, cancer and reproductive health, and exposure measurement and modelling of indoor and outdoor air pollution, green space, UV exposure, noise, temperature and physical activity, using new technology such as GIS, smartphones, personal sensors, and remote sensing. He has edited three books on exposure assessment and on environmental epidemiology, and has co-authored more than 350 papers published in peer reviewed journals.
Dr. Haneen Khreis is a cross-disciplinary expert in the health impacts of transport planning and policy. She has experience in transport planning and engineering, vehicle emissions, air quality, exposure assessment, epidemiology, health impact and burden of disease assessment, child health, policy options generation, knowledge translation, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and the science-policy link in transport and health. She has published extensively on the topic and is editing a new book on Traffic-Related Air Pollution, Human Exposures and Health.
